Bicheno to George Town

I'm a bit late getting this post out. The Wi-Fi in the hotel is a bit slow and uploading files to OneDrive just doesn't work for some reason. I managed to find an alternative way to upload them to my computer and the Google upload for the Blog worked fine.

We had a longish day driving today (about 3 hours) to get to George Town which is a small town near the top-middle coastline of Tasmania. The day was overcast and quite cool so we drove north to Binalong. Thinking we could get a coffee there we drove through St Helens and ended up at what is just a sleepy beach-side collection of holiday homes. Not unlike Lake Ferry.

With no coffee on offer we drove back to St Helens (which was on our way to George Town anyway) and got a) petrol, b) some extra grocery supplies (and booze at the BWS across the road) and c) an espresso and mini spinach and fetta frittata from a great bakery.

Our map indicated an easy walk to Halls Falls in the forests on our way north. We stopped and spent an hour or so walking in to see the weir that was built by Chinese miners during the 1880's Tin Mining era and the Falls which result further down the stream.

Next stop, not far up the road, was the Pyengara Dairy where we bought some 'Sharp & Crumbly Cheddar.' A quick stop for lunch using our freshly bought wholemeal sour dough and some meat, and brie we bought yesterday, expertly constructed in the boot of the car! This is when we miss our Motor Home! 

The drive from then on was pretty straightforward. It's amazing how the speed limit on these Aussie roads is almost always 100 kph when the sealed lane is only just wide enough for the car. Its easy to see how people could get their left wheels in the gravel and then spin out. I generally stuck to around 80 kph as that is what felt safe. Compare this to the idiotic NZTA decisions at home to make lots of rural roads 60 kph. From one extreme to another!

We are now set-up in a Motel unit at the George Town Pier Hotel. They don't allow cooking in the units so we will be eating out for the next two nights.

Dinner was more scallops (lightly cooked in brown butter - delicious) and a large line caught fish meal.
